Responsibilities & Context

About Us:

At Buying House, we believe that great garments start with exceptional fabrics. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, we source and develop materials that meet the evolving needs of our international clients, especially leading European fashion retailers. We are looking for a detail-oriented and experienced Fabric Developer with deep sourcing knowledge, technical expertise across cotton and blended materials, and a strong grasp of sustainability certifications and fabric compliance.

Position Overview:

The Fabric Developer will be responsible for sourcing, evaluating, and developing a wide range of cotton-heavy and blended fabrics used in denim and non-denim woven garments. The role requires hands-on experience in working with European buyers, understanding their aesthetic and technical requirements, and ensuring that all materials comply with sustainability standards such as GRS, OCS, BCI, GOTS, and OEKO-TEX. The candidate must have strong industry connections and the ability to work cross-functionally with internal teams and external mills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Source and develop a variety of fabrics including 100% cotton, cotton-elastane, cotton-polyester, TENCEL, viscose, and other sustainable blends.
  • Build a structured fabric library categorized by composition, certification, construction, supplier, and price range.
  • Collaborate with Product Development and Design teams to propose fabrics suitable for both structured and fluid woven garments.
  • Recommend fabric choices based on buyer needs, price positioning, and end-use — from rigid cottons for denim to soft blends for light woven items.
  • Evaluate fabric behavior in wash, dyeing, and finishing processes; conduct risk assessments to identify issues like puckering, shrinkage, or color loss.
  • Work with mills that offer certified organic, recycled, or sustainably sourced fabrics (e.g., GRS, OCS, GOTS, BCI).
  • Handle end-to-end communication for lab dips, handlooms, strike-offs, and test reports for buyer submissions.
  • Negotiate price, MOQ, and delivery timelines with vendors, balancing quality, cost, and sustainability.
  • Stay updated on global fabric trends and innovations in sustainable textile technology.
  • Manage certification records and traceability documents for buyer audits or compliance reviews.
